Before delving into the new element of the Periodic Table, I would like to remind those who haven't already entered that there is until tomorrow to participate in the NFT winter mascot drawing. It is a special NFT whose max supply is decided by the community.
Europium
Europium is the chemical element with atomic number 63 and its symbol is Eu.
Europium is the most reactive of the rare earth elements. It oxidizes rapidly when exposed to air and reacts similarly to calcium in the presence of water.
Europium is not found free in nature, however it is contained in various minerals, of which the most important are bastnasite and monazite. Europium was first observed by Paul Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran in 1890 who observed unusual spectral lines attributable to neither samarium nor gadolinium in samples in which these two elements had been concentrated.
Europium has commercial and industrial applications in the field of doping some glassy materials for making lasers. Its possible use in nuclear reactors is being studied for its ability to absorb neutrons.
Chiral salts of europium are used in nuclear magnetic resonance to simplify spectra where many signals resonate in a narrow, crowded region.
Furthermore, in combination with other elements such as gallium, strontium, sulphur, aluminum and barium, it is used in the special anti-counterfeiting inks used on euro banknotes.
Lanthanide compounds in general are widely used for photoluminescence applications, i.e. processes in which the absorbed radiation induces the formation of an excited state which will be partially deactivated by emitting radiation.
