Barium is the chemical element of atomic number 56 and its symbol is Ba.
It is a silvery-coloured, soft and very toxic metallic element; it belongs to the group of alkaline earth metals.
Barium compounds are used in small quantities in paints, in glass manufacture and in the production of green (in the form of barium chloride and other barium compounds) or electric white (in the form of barium oxide) fireworks.
This metal oxidises very easily when exposed to air and reacts strongly with water or alcohol.
Barium was first identified in 1774 by Carl Scheele and extracted in 1808 by Sir Humphry Davy in England.
When burned, barium salts dye the flame green.
Barium is mainly used in spark plugs for internal combustion engines, fireworks and fluorescent lamps. Also:
- in oxide form (and together with other strontium and calcium oxides), as a getter in vacuum tubes.
- barium salts (especially barium sulphate) are sometimes used as a contrast agent, administered orally or rectally to enhance the contrast of X-ray medical examinations of the digestive system.
- lithopone, a pigment containing barium sulphate and zinc sulphide, has good hiding power and does not darken when exposed to sulphides.
- barite is used extensively in oil wells to weigh down drilling fluids and in rubber production.
- barium carbonate is a useful rodent and is also used to make glass and bricks, while barium nitrate and chlorate are used to make green fireworks.
- impure barium sulphide is phosphorescent after exposure to light.
- as a magnet in some types of car speakers.
The giveaway
Lighting the cars with barium candles and ringing in the New Year.
Happy New Year to all and I wish you much satisfaction with the crypto world and with NFTs.
New giveaway for the new element of the periodic table. Among all those who will comment on the article before 16:00 CET on January 6, 90 users will be drawn to receive a free copy of this NFT with a max supply of 200 (1 wallet - 1 user - 1 NFT)
The Periodic Table NFT project
The Periodic Table NFT project aims to raise awareness of chemical elements in a modern key, basing the approach on blockchain and Non Fungible Token.
Day after day it will be possible to know the single elements that make up the table, to collect curiosities about each of them and about the table in general.
We are working to be able to learn, in a playful way, also what happens by combining the various elements.
The whole project is based on the collection of NFTs that can be bought on the site https://wax.atomichub.io/market?collection_name=periodicelem&order=desc&sort=created&symbol=WAX or by participating in simple giveaways published on publish0x.
