Cadmium is the chemical element with atomic number 48 and its symbol is Cd.
Metallic in appearance, it is toxic and relatively rare, it is found in zinc minerals and is widely used in rechargeable batteries.
Cadmium is a bivalent metal with a silvery appearance with bluish reflections; it is malleable, supple and soft to the point that it can be cut with a normal knife. In many respects it resembles zinc but tends to form more complex compounds than the latter; just as zinc is similar to calcium, cadmium has characteristics similar to strontium, but less reactivity.
Cadmium was discovered in 1817 in Germany by Friedrich Strohmeyer, who identified it among the impurities of calamine, a mineral based on zinc carbonate, noting that some impure samples of calamine changed color on heating, unlike pure calamine.
Although cadmium and its compounds are very toxic, the British Pharmacopoeia of 1907 lists cadmium iodide as a medicine to treat "swollen joints, scrofula and chilblains".
About three-quarters of the amount of cadmium produced is used in nickel-cadmium batteries, while the remaining quarter is mainly used to produce pigments, coatings and stabilizers for plastics.
Other uses include:
- The use in metal alloys with high wear resistance
- Use in cadmium plating, i.e. in coating materials with a metallic cadmium film by means of electrodeposition
- Cadmium compounds are used to produce the phosphors of black and white televisions and the blue and green phosphors of color televisions
- Cadmium sulfide is a yellow pigment
- The use in some semiconductors
- Some cadmium compounds are stabilizers for PVC
- It was used to build the first neutrino detector
