Rubidium is the chemical element with atomic number 37 and its symbol is Rb.
It is a soft element with a silvery-white color and belongs to the group of alkali metals. Rubidium is liquid slightly above room temperature.
Like the other alkali metals it ignites spontaneously in the air and reacts violently with water, releasing hydrogen which can also ignite itself. Like the other alkali metals it also forms amalgams with mercury and alloys with gold, cesium, sodium and potassium.
Its ions impart a violet color to the flame.
This element is believed to be the sixteenth for abundance in the earth's crust.
Other uses include those of:
- cooling fluid in turbines
- degasser in thermionic valves
- component of photocells
- production of special glass.
- creation of atomic clocks at low cost and limited in space.
- Rubidium salts are used to color fireworks red-violet.
