Rhodium is the chemical element with atomic number 45 and its symbol is Rh.
It is a rare, hard, silvery-white transition metal. It is found in the minerals of platinum and, in alloy with it, is used as a catalyst.
Rhodium is very reflective, has a higher melting point than platinum and lower density: it is not attacked by acids and dissolves only in hot sulfuric acid.
Rhodium (from the Greek rhodon, "pink") was discovered in 1803 by William Hyde Wollaston shortly after discovering palladium. Wollaston made the discovery in England from platinum ore which he allegedly obtained from South America.
The industrial extraction of rhodium is quite complex because there are very few ores of rhodium and this element is also found mixed in ores of other metals, such as palladium, silver, platinum and gold. The main sources of this element are the river sands of the Ural Mountains, the Americas and also in the copper-nickel sulfide mining area of Sudbury (Ontario).
For many years it was by far the most precious metal in the world, with a price that in July 2008 exceeded $ 10,000 per ounce ($ 350 / gram); subsequently the price fell considerably, becoming at the beginning of 2009 comparable to those of gold and platinum, but in 2020 the prices rose again, exceeding those of gold by ten times.
Rhodium is mainly used as a binder for platinum and palladium to give them greater hardness; these alloys are used in thermocouples, electrodes for spark plugs in aircraft engines, laboratory crucibles, windings for furnaces, dies for the production of glass fibers.
The giveaway
How many of you knew that one of the most precious metals in the periodic table is rhodium? Honest ......
Most people immediately think of gold and platinum and instead surprisingly, rhodium climbs on the top step of the podium.
As the king of preciousness it deserves a low max supply: only 99 NFT to characterize this element. Given also its complexity in the extraction, the pieces available in the giveaway are limited. 59 NFTs distributed with a draw among all those who comment on this article by April 17 at 16:00 CEST.
This element reserves another novelty: the 49 NFTs will not be distributed all in one solution, but in groups of 5 diluted with the next giveaways: the first 5 extracts will receive the rhodium with the distribution of the giveaway of element 46, the following 5 with the distribution of the giveaway of element 47, etc. ... up to element 57 which will conclude the distribution of the rhodium.
Such a precious metal deserves to be desired for a long time.
We also remind you that the contest for the creation of the NFT PSYCO is underway.
The Periodic Table NFT project
The Periodic Table NFT project aims to raise awareness of chemical elements in a modern key, basing the approach on blockchain and Non Fungible Token.
Day after day it will be possible to know the single elements that make up the table, to collect curiosities about each of them and about the table in general.
We are working to be able to learn, in a playful way, also what happens by combining the various elements.
The whole project is based on the collection of NFTs that can be bought on the site https://wax.atomichub.io/market?collection_name=periodicelem&order=desc&sort=created&symbol=WAX or by participating in simple giveaways published on publish0x.
