University of Oregon to use Theta EdgeCloud for AI Research
I had growing doubts IF we would see a major US University system with all the Southeast Asia based announcements Theta had been rolling out. Well, I have been proven wrong, again. Theta signed University of Oregon to leverage EdgeCloud for AI Research!
Who is the University of Oregon?
About the only thing I knew University of Oregon prior to writing this piece was they have super cool football helmets. Turns out they are a Tier 1 research institution for computer science and oddly enough AI. One key facility is their 'Distopia Laboratory' which focuses on several key areas such as:
- Blockchain
- Distributed Systems
- Federated Learning
- and building scalable fault-tolerate architectures
Key decision maker for Theta decision was
Dr. Suyash Gupta. Dr Gupta is well known globally and is a renowned speaker and contributor for such events as:
- Conference on Innovative Data Systems Research (CIDR),
- EuroSys 2023,
- International Conference on Data Engineering (ICDE),
- and the International Conference on Very Large Data Bases (VLDB)
What will University of Oregon Distopia Laboratory use Theta EdgeCloud AI for?
The main goal is to push the boundaries of AI research in terms of blockchain and federated learning. An ancillary benefit will be the productivity that comes from shared use of Theta's EdgeCloud GPU farm. I believe they have many more plans that have yet to be announced. And I can not wait to see what other US academia sign-on and get announced for Theta.

WooHoo, Theta EdgeCloud expands presence in the US academic by signing with the University of Oregon. This will ultimately bring more value to shared GPU resources and faster time to market with cutting edge research from Universities here in the USA and from SE Asia as well.
