My YouTube Adventure - When Life Isn't Live Anymore

Hello again!

In my last post I have talked about how a certain virus popped up and everything changed in 2020 -- including me and my job as a fitness class instructor. My fitness classes were canceled, I rested too much and soon felt the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle after years of disciplined workouts. Before that I worked out at least 6 hours per week. I decided to fight against those consequences. I decided to use my knowledge as an instructor to work out at home. This is the summary of my first post.

So let's continue with a bit more of the backstory which will give you an idea why I felt the need to try and live stream my home workouts:

In the fitness classes which I instructed up to the end of March 2020, I was used to work out in front of numerous participants. Sometimes these numbers were in the low triple digits. When I first started that job, it took quite some getting used to work out in front of that many people. Maybe you know the feeling that everybody in the room is looking at you? Well, most of the time that is just a feeling, but in my case that was pretty much my reality from one moment to the other. I was standing in the middle of the gym, up to 120 participants were around me watching my every move. It was scary at first, but it soon became exhilarating. I derived the energy to work out harder than ever before from it. It first became my reality, then it became a necessity. Working out by myself at home, I ended up not pushing myself quite as much as I could have. It just didn't feel right, I simply wasn't motivated enough.

In addition to being used to having lots of people around watching my every move, I was used to having plenty of space to work out. I was used to the music blasting loudly and further fueling my efforts. I was not used to being crammed in between my desk and my bed on the floor of my bedroom... That was a big change to say the least. In this new workout environment, I had to take into account the neighbors and my roommates. I had to be quiet. The music had to be quiet. And I had to adapt the exercises: I did not have the space to run in circles which I usually did in the beginning of my classes as a warmup. I might have actually had the space to run in place instead, but I decided that I wasn't that fond of running anyway -- mostly, because it would have been pretty loud for the neighbors. When it came to jumping I came to the same conclusion. I ended up adapting exercises from my fitness classes that were possible to be carried out in my narrow, quiet environment. I dropped numerous exercises, modified others, did not feel the motivation I needed, but at least, I started working out again. Finally!

In addition to having to change the exercises in my class , I also had to come up with a viable way to feel the motivation which I needed. In addition, there was the money problem. Usually, I earned a low, but steady revenue stream with my classes. Due to the special circumstances of 2020 that money was entirely missing. I needed to figure out a way to monetize my home workouts if I didn't want to have to pick up another job...

More on that soon... Stay tuned!
