Splinterlands announced earlier this morning that they will be moving their game off of Steem and onto the Hive blockchain! This is big news, coming not long after the fiasco earlier this year with Justin Sun's acquisition of Steem, exchange-assisted hard forks and the permanent split of Hive
Steem is planning a new hard fork today or tomorrow, apparently in order to seize the funds of witnesses who defected to the Hive blockchain. This was the final straw for the Splinterlands team and they decided to take their game over to the Hive blockchain.
All assets will be safe and the game will actually become a bit more self-contained, using their Dark Energy Crystals and game Credits for transactions rather than also allowing Steem and Steem Dollars to be used (it was a bit confusing to end up with three different currencies when selling or renting cards). The switch should be mostly seemless to the regular user, though they will need to login with their Hive keys rather than their Steem keys.
So far the value of Steem and Hive tokens seem to not be affected by this news. But since Splinterlands is by far the biggest game on either blockchain, I do expect this move to have some ongoing financial repercussions.
The move is planned for June 1st, though they stated that the move could happen earlier if issues come up with the Steem blockchain.
