Hey cryptopunks we love ya ! In an earlier post I whined and ranted that Brave had fouled me out. They were running ads (even on Publish0x !) offering five bucks for FREE! in BATS long, long after the free BAT was gone daddy gone. Well, no doubt due to the massive power of nearly two hundred hits on Publish0x, Brave has quit that nonsense. Thanks Brave lurkers !!
So now I have to say, with my mind cleared of that zit, the penny finally dropped and I see the true, awesome, decentralized, peer to peer, uncensorable beauty of Brave and BATS. I love it, it is gorgeous and revolutionary ! Can we kiss and make up Brave ? will you be my Saint Valentine? I think you will !!!
Even in the fog of war of the previous post, I had to note that the Brave browser is fast, clean and ad-blocky, and tracker freeish. But I totally missed the massive, world changing point of the whole exercise.
Which is this - even as Bitcoin is a giant middle finger to the sins of the central banks, Brave and BATS are going to revolutionize the media control and consumption of the world. Hear ye hear ye !! Brave's ads, and website, lead off with open source, privacy, security, & speed. Then they pitch how you can earn free BAT by watching ads. Only then, last & least, do they proclaim that Brave will "give publishers back their fair share of internet revenue." But THAT is the blockbuster.
Brave's ads should say "Destroy the new media's monopoly on entertainment and news!" "Let the people, not the governments and banks choose what they want to see and hear!" or simply "BTFU Youtube, Facebook, Spotify, Sticher, Pinterest, Paypal, Mastercard, VISA and banks!"
This is huge, bigger than big, I can't believe how long it took me to grok it. Most of us already know unstoppable Bitcoin already came to the rescue of Wikileaks and Julian Assange. But not without some stuttering. Actually, funny enough, one of the last messages Satoshi Nakamato his own self sent (before he vanished in a puff of mystery) was to fellow cypherpunk Julian. In 2010, Satoshi basically asked Wikileaks not to try and use Bitcoin, as Wikileaks had already "kicked the hornet's nest" and "the heat you would bring would likely destroy us (bitcoin) at this stage."
Fast forward to summer 2011; Wikileaks published Bush era Afgan war info that peeved the Pentagon, and for their trouble was shut down by Visa, Mastercard, and Paypal. 95% of their revenue got slammed, they lost hosting, etc etc. Even their bank, the Swiss post office (for god's sake, clearly Bitcoin is the only hope of the past glory of Swiss bank accounts) froze their accounts. Julian and Bitcoin made up fast and opened up a Bitcoin payment channel, which saved Wikileaks (if not fully Julian.)
TBF, the internet world kicked back, spammed and DDOS'ed people. Years later, think an Icelandic court ruled against Visa, but the point was moot by then ( and Wikileaks could never have survived to win that court case.) What really made the difference was all that lovely bitcoin flowing in. Julian said that the Bitcoin appreciated 50000% ( wow Moon Lambo baby!) Bitcoin stood alone against the powers of the financial world. Julian even tweeted that Bitcoin was "the real Occupy Wall Street movement." History had changed, and Wikileaks lived on to p-ss off the world with info on Guantanamo Bay, CIA hacking, Podesta's emails, etc etc.
OK, pretty freakin cool. But what I did not see was that Brave is gonna do this (free choice, free info, free will) for the whole wide world. And if Brave really already has ten million users, hey! assuming you, dear reader, are a member of the hip hop nation - "Shoulda killed me last year!"
Now, you may think Wikileaks went too far, in some ways I would agree. And you may think Alex Jones should be put back in a basement to wear a tinfoil hat, might be good there too. But back in the heady days of the decentralized internet breaking forth, we all thought information wanted to be free, and would be too. Fast forward, and Google dropped their " don't be evil" slogan and helped China build the " great firewall", create a real world panopticon, and institute a world where writing this post (and of course making fun of Xi Ping for looking like Pooh Bear) would get me, and I suspect many of you, banned from fast internet access or even a slow boat to get outta there. Youtube freed up the world, Facebook found all your old musical friends, Ebay let you find your bestest comic book, Instagram let us spread art, free thinking and free expression bloomed like the Arab spring--but then kinda died like that too. And then all those companies shut down the "free" part and started editing, censoring, boosting their favorites, killing those who don't buy ads, steering your politics, and of course taking your money like tolls, taxes, and governments, and depressing rather than elating the newest generations.
Let's say you fire up a huge following on Youtube. Should Youtube, as a virtual monopoly, take 90% of that money? freaking why? Should the government decide what's popular and who gets to speak? Only Brave stands in the way. Enter the brave player, Brave. Well, Patreon too, but they only do it in a snobbish, high end, non-viral kind of way ( "give us your money up front") whereas Brave can crack this for the masses.
Move to China if you want, eat some live bat soup for me, but I'll stay here in the West and help Brave keep the free world free. Starting today, I am gonna run Brave all the time. I will collect me some BATS, and I will give them to my favorite nutcases out there. And if we all do that, the world will be a better, freer place. Now if Brave deplatforms someone, you will hear me start to squeal and whine again. But until then, you Brave b-stards, I am in! Give the money to the creators. Let the giving and taking be P2P, uncensorable, unstoppable. Take back the centralized power of the big firms to deplatform, shadowban, and de-finance. Hell, this week I even heard TOR is up inside Brave. God bless ya Brave, live long & prosper, and live free or die. What do you think ? are you with me ? power to the Brave people right on!
