The difference is that the WSB crowd got steamrolled by the last economic crisis and Portnoy's family didn't. That's not due to Portnoy's smarts or resourcefulness — it's strictly luck of the draw. Read Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. He puts the science to the freak success case. Basically, somebody HAS to come out on top because probabilities and statistics. It's mathematically impossible for someone to not come out on top in an economic crisis, and it could have been anybody, but most likely, it will be the person that is most advantageously placed for the situation, which is also luck of the draw.

And this loser had the nerve to tell other people to buy the top and lose them money as well — people with a lot less money than Portnoy. That's prosecutable, isn't it? But at the very least, this market is the world shoving Portnoy back into the hole he came from and exhorting him to stay there.
