Estimated reading time: 10–12 minutes | A little recess from life's nonsense
How are you? No, seriously, how are you? How's your day going? Have you been noticing what's happening in the world lately? Apparently, there have been elections, new energies coming in, and people are feeling confident. Things are still fluctuating, and everybody seems to have an opinion about where everything is heading. But you know what shouldn't fluctuate? How you take care of yourself. That's one thing I think we need to stop putting on the back burner. Check in with yourself. Ask yourself, "How am I?" Not how's the economy, not how's the neighbour, not how's everybody else doing. How are YOU?
And don't forget to tap that notification button, because I love having these conversations. I love sharing my blogs with y'all. So let's continue talking about what makes sense and what doesn't.
If you've been following my story, you know I've been taking you through the grades of my life, sharing what I've learned about growing up, investing in myself, money, and all those experiences that helped make me who I am. Right now, I'm at Grade 11. But we're not going to talk about Grade 11 today. I'm taking a break. Consider this recess during life. You know, when you just sit down, take a moment, and talk about something completely different. Because have you noticed that things don't make sense anymore?
Which brings me to something that happened the other day.
My husband and I were doing laundry. And when we go for laundry, we make a day out of it. Why not? The clothes are getting cleaned, so we might as well enjoy ourselves while we're at it. We sat down, grabbed a drink at a place called Landlubbers, and just chilled. You know, one of those moments where you're sitting there going, "Yeah, y'all. How you doing?" Nothing fancy. Just living.
Earlier, we'd had a conversation with a girl, and it got me thinking about how many things we accept as normal even when they don't make much sense to me.
We're thinking about getting a dog. So I asked her, "Do you know anybody who's giving away a dog?" And she said, "Oh, I wish. People don't really do that." And I thought, yeah, but cats? People seem to give away cats all the time. Here, here, here. Have a cat.
And then I started thinking. What is this distinction we've made between cats and dogs?
You can see a cat roaming around the neighbourhood, unattended, free as the day it was born. Born free! And people look at it and say, "Oh, look at that kitty cat." Isn't that nice? But let a dog go walking down the same street by itself, and suddenly everybody's concerned. What's wrong? Is it lost? Does it need help? Who do we call? How do we save it?
Now, I understand there are differences in how we care for cats and dogs, and there are safety concerns and local rules. But I'm talking about the way our minds respond to the sight of one versus the other. That distinction fascinates me.
And the girl and I continued talking. I said, dogs can protect your home, protect your house. Cats don't necessarily do that. Yet cats are often allowed to roam around, and dogs aren't. We have neighbourhood cats. Have you ever heard somebody casually talking about the neighbourhood dog in the same way? Not really. Because a dog roaming around usually becomes everybody's business.
Why do we think one thing is perfectly normal and the other is an emergency?
Some things don't make sense. But you know what does make sense? Self-care.
And here's another one that boggles my mind. The distinction between a bikini and underwear.
Think about it. You go to the beach and see people wearing bikinis, Speedos, bathing suits, whatever. Everybody's walking around, swimming, enjoying themselves. It's perfectly normal. But somebody goes home, puts on underwear or a bra, and suddenly the same amount of coverage has a completely different meaning.
Now, yes, I know the fabric can be different. Bathing suits are made for swimming. Underwear isn't necessarily made for jumping into the ocean. I'm not suggesting you throw your underwear on and go diving off the nearest dock. Although, come on, people have probably done stranger things.
What fascinates me is how we've trained our minds to separate things based on where we are and what we've decided to call them. At the beach, it's a bathing suit. At home, it's underwear. The setting changes how we think about what we're looking at.
It's funny how our minds can make something seem completely sensible just because we've been taught to see it that way.
Some things don't make sense. But guess what? Self-love and self-care do.
New technology. New expectations. New rules. New ways of doing things. Something that was perfectly normal yesterday suddenly becomes outdated tomorrow. And we're all supposed to keep up with it.
Well, excuse me. Some of us are still trying to finish the laundry.
So don't worry your head over everything. Continue doing what makes sense to you.
For me, that means taking care of myself. Making sure I'm eating properly, checking in with my mindset, protecting my peace, and giving myself what I need so I can think clearly through the mess that life sometimes throws my way.
And here's a question I keep coming back to. If the world wants us to be successful, why do so many things around us seem to demand more of our health, our time, our mindset, and our well-being?
We're encouraged to work harder, do more, stay connected, stay informed, keep up, and never fall behind. And then we're told to relax. Take care of ourselves. Find balance.
Well, which one is it?
Well, welcome to my recess.
Anyways, follow along for more conversations about what I've learned in my life, how I've disconnected—excuse me, disconnected. See? Even my mouth is trying to tell me something. How I've disconnected from what was to who I am, so I can see things more clearly.
Because the farther you get away from the picture of toxicity and the things that don't make sense, the more you realize that you do make sense.
And maybe that's the whole point of today's conversation.
Not everything needs to make sense. But you deserve to take care of yourself while you're figuring life out.
So take care of you. Thanks for listening, and welcome to Canada's Selflove Daily Channel. Follow along, because there's plenty more to talk about.
And you know what?
Self-love and self-care will get you there. Canadian or not.
