Morning JAVA: Idiocracy Makes You Smarter

Eating Smarties Won't Make You Smarter Though.

Around the year 2009, I saw the movie 'Idiocracy' for the first time. At that time, barely anyone had ever heard of this independently made movie relesed in 2005 and shown in few theaters. While the movie is meant to be a comedy, its parallels with modern society struck me then and still strikes me now.

I knew this movie would develop a following as one of the funniest movies ever made while at the same time, one that sends a clear message that if we don't get our act together, we could devolve into a society of smucks. It's going on 20 years since this classic was released and today, this movie has more meaning than ever.

The world really has devolved into a chaotic mess with farmer protests in Europe, wars in Ukraine and Gaza, borders under siege, ships targeted with missiles and marine drones and stuff like that. Why can't we just settle matters with monster trucks instead? Who ever rolls over first wins.

Idiocracy had a stellar young cast with Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph, Terry Crews, Justin Long and Dax Sheperd. The main characters enter a cryogenics program and of course, are forgotten and 500 years into the future, when the Great Garbage Collapse happened were they finally set free and awaken in a dystopian world of sponge brains and the two realize they are the smartest people in the world.

Terry Crews continues to make 'President Camacho' videos. Watch this funny clip of Camacho having traveled back in time from the year 2505 to run for President in 2024 but when asked why he came back, he laments that they forgot the recipe for cheese. He says, "I was 11 years old... and somebody ate the last slice... and everybody was like 'Dat's it?'" He goes on to say, "Pizza without cheese? That's hell on Earth".

I consider Idiocracy one of the top funniest movies I've ever seen. I often see it quoted in articles on the internet, most often to compare it with modern society and the sheer idiocy we see everyday, all around us. It's amazing how crazy things seem to have gotten just in the last few years.

We long for someone to say something smart, to inspire us and invoke a common spirit. Here's a short, inspiring video clip of Joe Biden with some 30 video edits as he tries to speak just a few sentences.

On top of that, I heard through the grapevine that Biden denied Camacho's request to have the secret service protect the recipe for cheese.

This is an outrage!

The truth is, Idiocracy teaches us a simple lesson, that to be smarter, you have to work at it. It doesn't mean having to know everything, which is impossible anyways. Our brains need regular exercise and reading (and writing) is one of the best forms of brain exercise. Do word puzzles or play games like Scrabble. Try to avoid being a vegetable in front of your computer, phone or TV. You don't want to become like one of the characters in the movie, needing your hand held all the time.

There should be a study involving around 10,000 people to see if watching the movie Idiocracy makes them smarter or not. It might take about 500 years for the study to be completed but I'm sure it'll be worth the wait!

Have you seen the movie 'Idiocracy'? Did you see the parallels with modern society too? Did you just laugh all the way through? Share your thoughts in the comments section below, thanks.
