Studies have shown coffee to be good for longevity!
That's a question curious coffee drinkers want to know. Does coffee extend your life? It's the most popular non-alcoholic drink in the world, at least in my house it is. I began to drink coffee at about age 14 and I've enjoyed it on a regular basis ever since. So far, I'm not feeling any weird effects from coffee. If anything, it's helped me stay focused.
There is evidence that coffee, that quicker pickerupper in the morning, has beneficial properties that could actually extend your life. Imagine that? Is it possible that we add a few extra seconds to our lives every time we have a cup of coffee? I'm also thinking it might also have something to do with looking forward to waking up in the morning and enjoying that first cup.
In the last few decades, with global shipping, coffee has become widely available as never before. It's popularity has been explosive. Over the years, the debate has gone back and forth. It's bad for us. It's good for us. Yet, after all this time, I still don't know anyone who may have died from drinking too much coffee.
The evidence is strong that coffee is so beneficial that we can add years to our lives. The ideal amount is 4 to 5 cups a day. Men have been shown to add 12% to their lives while women added 16%! Even moderate drinkers have shown positive results.
Believe it or not, coffee is the biggest source of anti-oxidants in the Western diet and contains hundreds of compounds. Coffee drinkers in a 2012 study were shown to less likely die from infection, respiratory disease, heart disease, diabetes and stroke.
Other studies have shown that coffee drinkers are less likely to get Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Coffee has also been shown to make people feel happier, thereby lowering the risk of depression.
Coffee does have that effect, doesn't it? I sure feel good when sipping that first cup in the morning. Truth is, there's no written guarantee coffee could extend anyone's life but it's worth a try, I think. Besides, if coffee was bad for me, it should have killed me long ago. I enjoy it every day and I'm in that group that drinks 4 - 5 cups daily.
What you add to your coffee though, is what may be bad for you, especially sugar. The average person consumes four times the recommended daily amount of sugar. It's in almost everything from cereals to cookies. For coffee drinkers, this is a major issue and should be taken seriously. It's no secret that sugar in such high amounts is bad for our health and sweetened coffee is a major source of sugar in our diets.
While you might get a rush from that first cup of coffee with added sugar, your blood sugar spikes and soon after, crashes. If this happens repeatedly, over and over again on a daily basis, you don't need a doctor to tell you this could lead to diabetes. The average American ingests 17 teaspoons of sugar daily and anywhere between 250 and 1,000 pounds yearly. That's shocking!
I prefer to drink my coffee black with a dab of honey as well as a dash of cinnamon in my first cup of the day. I avoid milk and creams, especially the fake powdered kind. In doing so, I've drastically reduced processed sugar intake and I've remained slim, my weight steady. How you make your cup of coffee is totally up to you but please consider reducing the amount of sugar added. It's nice to have a little bit of sweetener but if it drowns out the flavor of your delicious coffee, then it defeats the purpose. Your body, mind and spirit will benefit from less sugar in your diet.
Considering that each cup may add seconds to my life, I'm going to keep on enjoying my coffee, even more so than before. Coffee is good for us. It's what we add to it that may be bad for our health.
