Buy your seeds ASAP

Now's The Time To Buy Your Seeds

Two of the very first articles I published on my blog last year were titled 'My seeds have arrived' and 'Bitcoin or Seeds'. You can probably tell already that I love planting and growing veggies. I've tried growing all sorts including a few varieties of tomatoes, squash, zuchini, lettuces, carrots, turnips, parsnips, celery, rhubarb, corn, onions, blueberries, kale, asparagus and a variety of spices. I have three empire apple saplings started from seed that will be entering their third spring this year along with a couple of lemon trees I started last year. I even started a mango sapling after I noticed that a nut from a mango sprouted after I threw it in my compost pile. They actually look very nice when they're small. I haven't figured out what to do with it though. Mango trees can grow as large as maple trees.

I am filtering news from the internet and getting some hints that fertilizer and nitrogen costs are soaring and impacting the farm industry and may result in substantially higher food prices and even worse, a possible food shortage. I hope it doesn't come to that but better be safe than sorry and plan ahead.

The best way to counter this is to start growing your own foods but first you'll need seeds. I am sensing that this year, there will be a huge increase in 'backyard farmers' getting into the game and growing their own produce in an effort to become self-sustaining. Last year and the year before, there was a rush by consumers to buy seeds between December and February. Many seed retailers simply ran out. I think the same will happen this season.

If you'd like to grow your own vegetables, I recommend buying your seeds online as soon as possible before supplies run out. As word of the fertilizer and nitrogen issue becomes more widely known, a seed 'panic buy' may ensue and if you're at the end of the line, you're out of luck. Better to be at the front of the line.

Farmers in the USA  impacted by rising fertilizer costs which in some cases has risen more than 300% are planning to switch from corn to soy as soy uses much less fertilizer but now the word is that there's a shortage of soy seeds (see reference link below). Expect to see less corn on the market this year. The farmers themselves are telling us this. Corn based products are used in so many items we find in our grocery store shelves so this will impact more than just the corn itself.

I am ready to start planting this spring. The excitement within me is growing. I have my seeds and I'm anxious to get to work producing my own food. I have a little back yard and it's maximized for plant growth. I pay a lot of property tax for my yard so I might as well grow something out of it, so to speak!

If you live in an apartment, you can still grow your foods in pots by the window or on the balcony (if you have one). Many cities and towns have community growing areas and allot small plots for families to use in growing their own foods. Check with your region's website for more information on the subject and where plots may be found.

Spring will be here very soon. Get in early and buy your seeds now before they're all gone. We can expect seeds to cost a bit more this year too along with everything else. I also encourage you to allow some of your plants to grow to maturity and collect / save your own seeds for next year and so on. I've been harvesting / collecting my own seeds for a few years now but still occasionally buy new seeds online or at the local greenhouse retailer.

I bought seeds last year from Urban Harvest out of Toronto, Ontario. Very reliable for great non-GMO seeds. Here is the link to their front page (not a referral link): Urban Harvest

Here's to a successful growing season!
