No, I haven't spelt Weekend incorrectly. I'm talking about the pop superstar, Abel Tesfaye, AKA The Weeknd.
And he has gone NFT on us this weekend (Easter 2021) having raised over $2 million in his NFT auction.
What Happened?
On 3rd April 2021, The Weeknd had an NFT Auction via Gemini-owned Nifty Gateway.
This consisted of a variety of three open editions, two silent auctions, and two raffles. The open edition flash sale was held for three different pieces of visual artworks, each with a filtered segment of The Weeknd's new unlreleased track. There was due to be an unlimited amount of these works available to purchase for a limited time only. The cheapest pieces were priced at $100 and the open flash sale reportedly raised $1.4 million across a 15 minute period. The silent auctions were 24-hour auctions for artwork backed by Weeknd's new song in full and unfiltered.
The flagship item though was a unique token of an animated video accompanied by a full song. The winner of this auction is the only person to have this song, as The Weeknd has said he will not be releasing the song on any platforms in the future. Bidding ran for 24 hours and closed at $490,000 on Sunday evening. The Weeknd made a totol of $2.29 million across all items on the auction. Not bad for a weekend's work! lol.
