Jan was born in Spain, in the town of Almodóvar del Campo on 6 January 1500.
At the age of 14, he began to study law at the University of Salamanca, then studied philosophy and theology at the seminary in Alcalá.
After the death of his parents, he gave away the property to the poor. After receiving the priestly ordination, he invited twelve beggars to the table for the first time and personally served them.
As a preacher, he went through all Andalusia, catechising children and teaching adult prayers. Because he did not receive sacrifices for Mass intentions, he lived a very poor life.
In 1531-32 - suspected of preaching heresy - he spent two years in the Inquisition prison, but eventually he was cleared of charges and after numerous interventions he was released.
After 1540, he devoted himself to the creation of a network of colleges and universities. He founded, among others University of Baeza in the south of Spain.
Saint John in history enrolled as a people's missionary, mystic, university lecturer and author of works on spiritual life. He was a thrilling preacher, and the teachings he propagated led to many conversions - Saint. John of God, after hearing his sermons in Granada, so zealously repented and showed sorrow for sins, he was considered a madman.
Saint John of Avila died on May 10, 1569 in Montilla, near Cordoba. He was beatified by Leon XIII on April 4, 1894. On May 31, 1970 he was canonized by Pope Paul VI.
