On May 12, 1944, the decisive attack of the Second Polish Corps under the command of General Władysław Anders began at Monte Cassino.
The soldiers went to the night attack in the mined, almost unprotected area, under heavy fire carried by well-trained German paratroopers.
For the next four days, the artillery was firing at the enemy's position. The monastery was very difficult to get, because the Allied air forces changed it into a rubble as a result of heavy raid.
In the battle of Monte Cassino, 924 Polish soldiers were killed, 2,930 were injured.
Polish soldiers, even when the post-war fate of Poland was already decided, were still able to fulfill their obligations to the Allies without sparing their lives. Thanks to the occupation of Monte Cassino, it was once again possible to recall the contribution of the Polish soldiers to the final victory in World War II.
