Travel Portugal - Furnas Azores

By portugal | portugal | 29 Feb 2020

In the Furnas valley we can find a little bit of everything that the best island of São Miguel and the Azores has to offer.

In addition to the ubiquitous green of the fields, here is one of the most beautiful gardens in the world, as well as a strong volcanic activity that is felt in fumaroles and spills into gastronomy, with the famous stew of the furnas.

Volcanic manifestations abound especially in Vale das Furnas, on the island of São Miguel there are "fumarolas", there are thermal waters, there are boilers heated by magma. This is because the entire valley is within the crater of one of the most active volcanoes on the island.

The place is a wonder, despite the smell of sulfur that rises through our nostrils. The vapors are released by the rock, by the walls, by the sewage lids, by the very earth that creates pools of scalding and bubbling mud. Everything smoked !!!

There are several thermal springs on the walls. Some of them have an unforgettable taste that is so strong and unpleasant that it is. Others are quite pleasant, with a flavor similar to "Água das Pedras", but with less gas.

Furnas is a civil parish in the municipality of Povoação on the island of São Miguel in the Portuguese Azores. The population in 2011 was 1,439. The parish is one of the largest in the island and in the Azores. It is located east of Lagoa and Ponta Delgada, west of Povoação and southeast of Ribeira Grande.
