The Nifty Gateway platform announced on Dec. 14 that an NFT artwork collection had sold for $777,777, making it the most expensive NFT ever sold.
- The artwork is one of 20 different pieces from a collection titled “The Complete MF Collection”
- It was created by Beeple, who took inspiration from nature, technology and Star Wars to create the collection
- The winning bid was made by Tim Kang, who praised the artwork for its “precise attention to detail across the physical and digital spectrum at a caliber unmatched”
- Before Kang’s last second bid, he and other bidders had been pricing the piece in the $200,000-$400,000 range
- NFTs have grown in popularity in 2020, with numerous artworks being sold for 6 figure prices, including a reprogramming digital art of Vitalik Buterin that sold for $141,000 in Nov.
- The month of Oct. also saw two major sales, with a Satoshi digital artwork selling for $131,000 and a Batman artwork selling for $200,000
