Esta expresión hace referencia a un perrito muy hambriento al que se le ofrece algo de comida (una torta), pero cuando se dispone a comerla se le ofrece otro bocado más apetitoso (otra torta).

  Cuando descuida el primer alimento para tratar de comer el segundo otro perro le arrebata su comida y al tratar de defenderla también le arrebatan el segundo bocado, ósea que se quedó sin nada el pobre.

  Y bien, ¿Qué es lo que quiere decir esta expresión? : que no debemos codiciar los bienes ajenos ya que podemos perder lo que ya tenemos, pero también aplica a alguien que quiere hacer dos o más cosas pero no puede hacer ninguna porque no tiene tiempo y termina con las manos vacías, solo perdió su tiempo y las dos o más oportunidades que se le presentaron.
