Dingo v. Doge

The Doges of War

Dogecoin sparked the craze for canid coins by forking off Bitcoin and assimilating some useful Litecoin features, successfully addressing Bitcoin’s shortcomings such as high fees, slow transaction speed and mining limitations. Also, and by no means least of which, was the imprint of a friendly face and character upon what was essentially a rather serious abstract digital currency. Nothing new of course, notes and coins have borne the faces of significant entities forever, even humorous ones.

And in a kind of breeding frenzy, ever since Doge was released, dog coins have proliferated. Some are just tokens that float around on other blockchains, pumped ad nauseum, and usually the worst of the bunch. Others are derivatives of Bitcoin itself with their own blockchain and proof-of-work protocols which often attempt to improve on the original code and incorporate new, useful features.

One such innovation, also a fork, actually  from Doge, is Dingocoin. Late in the day and possibly the runt of the litter but keen nonetheless. It offers some novel features over its parent: its own NFT platform, purported enhanced security from a 51% attack (which it has suffered from in the past) and the scalability to handle any conceivable volume of instant payments.

Although on friendly terms with Doge at present—both are merge-mined with Litecoin and are the only two meme coins used for payment on Flip App—but what if the friendly rivalry took a Darwinian turn, and it became dog-eat-dog. Who would win?

For fun, let’s consider that unlikely possibility: although Dingo’s market cap has swollen considerably in the last month, to around $6,000,000, it is indisputably the underdog compared to Doge. If the two entities were to meet in real life, it is doubtful that Doge would even realise it: except perhaps by scent alone, because Dingo would be no bigger than an insect. In terms of market cap, Dingo is at present smaller than Doge by a factor of 5000.

The crypto space is where the idealism of radical socioeconomic theories from the last 150 years can find real application, because ideals such as decentralisation and egalitarianism and democratic rights can be embedded into code and protocols that are resistant to the corruption of human agency.
