In an unexpected turn of events for Ripple and its co-founder Chris Larsen, news of a hack of XRP worth 112.5 million dollars is circulating on Maxi Media.
A few hours ago, self-proclaimed crypto-spy ZachBXT claimed for the first time that a hacking attack on Ripple has taken place, costing the blockchain a total of 213 million XRP. He has also stated that the hacker probably tried to shuffle the stolen XRP by sending them to different addresses or wallets.
The news spread like wildfire and the maxi-media, of course without getting to the bottom of it, ran headlines everywhere like 'Ripple gets hacked'. But the media always seems to be in a hurry when news like this comes out of nowhere.
To cool things down, Chris Larsen, co-founder and executive chairman of Ripple, immediately stepped in and clarified the matter.
So we can conclude two things from Chris's clarification. First, that it was not the Ripple, the company's wallet that was hacked. Secondly, it was Chris' personal wallet that was compromised.
Beyond that, there are a lot of serious questions raised by the incident. People wanted to know how Chris was able to dispose of more than $100 million worth of XRP or if he would even tell the public about the hack without ZackBXT exposing it.
XRP crashed, if only for a few minutes, as soon as the tweet popped up on X. The price recovered to the same level when the clarification tweet came from the chairman himself. It was only a few minutes of chaos for XRP, but it seemed pretty spooky. It could have been a lot worse if Chris had not responded and clarified immediately.
