Daytrip to Qaqortoq

By pSub | Adventures Around the World | 10 Mar 2020

In this post I write about a day trip to the city Qaqortoq in Greenland. I visited Qaqortoq after a kayaking trip through south Greenland. You can read about the kayaking trip in my posts Kayaking in Greenland and To the Icecap with many pictures.

Quaqortoq is the biggest city (or you could say the only) in southern Greenland with a population of 3000 and it really feels like a small city. It has four supermarkets, two football stadiums, multiple cafes and bars, a museum, a small shopping mile. Quaqortoq has also a good economic structure, notably a tannery and sewing room processing sealskin.

We booked one of the few speedboats that connect the settlements in Greenland. Those boat drivers really know their jobs and drive you with an amazing speed and precision through the icebergs.

Our boat had a little cabin to protect from the cold airstream. If your boat doesn't, better dress warmly. Our transfer to Quaqortoq took about one and a half hour.

Quaqortoq is a beautiful city build between two hills and stretching one of them. Most houses are neat and inhabited. After the long kayaking trip is was nice to get in touch with civilization step by step. In Quaqortoq we could enjoy our first coffee in a cafe since two weeks and we could go shopping in surprisingly well equipped little stores.

After visiting the city we hiked around a lake close the the city. There are nice trails and you can swim inside the lake as well. At least the locals did. On our way through the city the passed by the graveyard and many art projects. Mostly

All in all Quaqortoq is a really nice place to visit. Even if you don't want to purchase clothes from sealskin. ;)

In the afternoon we headed back to Narsaq to enjoy our last evening with a big barbecue.
