What is happening in northern Kosovo?

By Vladan Lausevic | Vlad's politics | 1 Jun 2023

The situation in north Kosovo has worsened, with clashes between ethnic Albanian mayors and Serb protestors resulting in injuries to NATO peacekeepers, members of Kosovo's police force, and civilians. The northern Serb population does not recognize Pristina's sovereignty and instead follows the lead of Belgrade. They refuse to accept the newly elected mayors and have tried to prevent them from entering municipal facilities. In response to the escalating tensions, NATO has sent an additional 700 peacekeeping troops to Kosovo and canceled the ongoing Defender 2023 exercise.

The international community, including the EU and the United States, has called for de-escalation and urged both sides to engage in urgent talks. However, their statements have been criticized for not adequately acknowledging the role of Serb protestors in the violence against NATO forces. On the other hand, China and Russia have voiced support for Serbia, blaming Kosovo for the violence and calling on the West to stop its "false propaganda."

Serbia's President, Alexander Vucic, has canceled a visit to Bratislava and demanded the withdrawal of Pristina's police forces from the north of Kosovo. He met with QUINT ambassadors and expressed concern about the tolerance of violence by the international community. Meanwhile, Kosovo's Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, has insisted that the newly elected mayors are legitimate and condemned the protestors as extremists.

The situation is further complicated by the ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine and Serbia's refusal to align with EU sanctions against Moscow. Some have warned that the presence of the Russian private military company Wagner in Serbia and near the Kosovo border could exacerbate the crisis.

Amidst the escalating tensions and conflicting international positions, the situation remains volatile, with the risk of further violence and a potential regional crisis.
