Adam Smith, the prominent economist, established himself as a leading figure in economic thought with his book "The Wealth of Nations." His ideas influenced subsequent economists such as David Ricardo, Karl Marx, John Maynard Keynes, and Milton Friedman.
Smith was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, and received his education at the University of Glasgow and Balliol College, Oxford. He held academic positions at Glasgow University before leaving to tutor the Duke of Buccleuch. During his travels with the duke, Smith encountered notable intellectuals of his time.
Afterward, he retired to Kirkcaldy and wrote "The Wealth of Nations," published in 1776. Smith also worked as a customs commissioner and defended the legitimacy of smuggling in his book. His reputation today rests on his explanation of how rational self-interest in a free-market economy leads to economic well-being. Smith emphasized ethics and charity in his works, seeing sympathy and self-interest as complementary. He argued that individuals pursuing their self-interest also benefit society as a whole.
Smith's book explored the nature and causes of a nation's prosperity, highlighting the importance of the division of labor. He discussed various topics, including wage differentials and the detrimental effects of mercantilism. While Smith believed in free markets, he recognized the role of government in enforcing contracts, providing public works, and granting patents and copyrights. He expressed skepticism towards retaliatory tariffs and addressed issues such as education reform. Smith's writings shaped classical economics and continue to have a lasting impact on economic science.
