Are We Actually Saving Time With Technology?

Are We Actually Saving Time With Technology?

I believe technology has indeed saved us time, yet I am not convinced we have learned to use it more efficiently.

There is a multitude of tasks that are no longer taking much effort from us. Now we can instantly send a message instead of awaiting for a letter. We can order food without going outside, get directions without having to ask anyone, pay bills via our phone, and find needed information without going to a library. Tasks that used to take us hours can now be accomplished within minutes.

However, there is one peculiar thing: despite the time-savings factor, technology creates a bunch of new tasks for us.

Those five minutes that we save completing a certain task online can easily vanish in an app that requires our attention. We open one notification, and then another; next thing you know, we are scrolling for hours without being aware of time passing by.

And sometimes I feel like technology did not give us more spare time; instead, it just accelerated all the tasks and put something new into those gaps of time.

Maybe the issue does not lie in technology itself.

Maybe it lies in the way we use it.

In addition, technology has influenced our understanding of the concept of "saving time."

Everything needs to be done fast today  responses should come quick, videos should load right away, food should be delivered promptly, and any information should be accessible at all times.

And it becomes extremely irritating when something does not happen so quickly although this happens normally, just due to technical issues.

Although technology has made most aspects of our lives very convenient, convenience is not always equal to having more time. It may just change our perception of things and make us believe that we should be able to do more.

For this reason, I believe that the issue is not how much time technology saves us.

The real question is, "How are we using this time?"

It is true that if we are able to use the extra time we have for communicating, learning new things, resting, or working on something important, then technology has been helping us.

But if this time goes into receiving notifications, watching videos, and doing more tasks, then perhaps it is not even about saving time anymore.

We just speed up things.
