Outside of Nha Trang is this fortification. Most of the surrounding walls and fortifications were destroyed by the French (circa 1945 I think).
These fortifications once surrounded the entire city, but most were destroyed .

The French occupation of Vietnam began sometime between 1860-1870 (the story is quite complicated and occurred over a long period of time) to 1954.
The history of Vietnam involves occupation by many countries including China, France and Japan.
There are many leftovers from the French rule, most notably French Architecture which stands in stark contrast to Vietnamese architecture and Bánh Mì (Bread). Vietnamese bread is fantastic and obviously heavily influenced by the French.

The Bánh mì has a deliciously crunchy crust and the bread inside is light and fluffy.

This is the Saigon Opera House. You can find evidence of French Architecture all over Vietnam.
