Splinterlands Battle Mage Challenge - Counterspell

Splinterlands Battle Mage Challenge - Counterspell

Hey!

After many fights I finally got a battle with the Counterspell rule, which is this week’s battle Challenge, so let’s get to it.

Counterspell

When this rule is in effect, all Monsters get the Magic Reflect ability, which means they return half of the damage dealt to them, rounded up. So, if you receive three points of damage, you return two.

If this rule is in effect, you definitely shouldn’t use Magic Monsters, unless it’s strictly necessary, because of some effect. Ideally, if you want to use some, you should use the ones which have the Void effect, so if they attack, they won’t be damaged back, unless the enemy has a Monster with Amplify in his team, or your attack is too strong.

In this rule we also assume that Magic won’t be used much or not at all, so offensive wise, you should think about strengthening your Ranged and/or Melee cards, because your opponent may try to debuff yours. And defensive wise, you should do exactly that to your opponent… try to debuff his Melee and Ranged attackers, since that is what we are both left with.

Since we already have Magic being returned, you should consider using another effect like this, such as Thorns or Return Fire, to diminish your opponent’s options even more and, if you’re able to combine this with Amplify, even better. Summoners that grant these effects to all of your Monsters are great for this: Mylor Crowling, Ilthain or Lir Deepswimer.

At last, considering Magic is a risk and that we’ll be using physical attacks, Speed and Armor has much more relevance, so consider buffing/debuffing these particular stats

Lineup & Strategy

This battle was fought in a Modern Ranked match with a Bronze level cap. Considering that in Bronze you can’t pull many tricks, since Monsters do not have many effects, I chose to use a fast and strong card as the center of my strategy… yep, a Gladiator.

  • To be able to summon a Gladius and to strip my opponent of Armor, I picked Eternan Brune.
  • To protect myself from physical attacks, I picked the Antoid Platoon, since it has Shield.
  • I wanted a Monster in the second position with a decent amount of Health and the Radiated Brute was the best option with the Mana available.
  • In third position, to boost my Gladiator, the Venari Marksrat with his Martyr effect.
  • As the key card in this lineup, Fina Voxom. She’s already fast with four points of Speed, but with the addition of the Bloodlust and Martyr effects, she becomes really evasive. On top of that, she can kill with a single hit.
  • Then, the Firecaller in the fifth position, to make sure the Martyr effect boosts Fina Voxom. He also has a strong attack, slow though.
  • At last, to further protect the back line while Fina does damage, a Mana free Monster, the Scorch Fiend.

Both teams were decimated, but that was their purpose; to protect Fina Voxom, while she takes down the enemy cards. Using a Gladius wasn’t my only way of approaching this battle. I also thought of using the Life Splinter’s Ranged attackers, but considering my opponent used a Ranged cards debuffer, the Ash Mirage, and many Sneak attackers, my lineup was the right choice.
