What are the vitamin C body functions? You may know some of them.
Vitamin C is a very powerful antioxidant, neutralizing pollutants and toxins, the harmful free radicals are neutralized donating electrons, can be reactivated accepting electrons again. As a coenzyme, helps in the synthesis of collagen (the connective tissue component in the muscle, blood vessels, bones, tendons and ligaments). It is also important in wound healing, preventing the rupture of the blood vessels, it is used in peptide hormones and neurotransmitters, and in production of the bile acid.
In case of deficiency, you may experience fatigue, loss of appetite, drowsiness, insomnia, irritability, low immunity, and severe deficiency leads to scurvy (hardening of the connective tissue resulting in widespread bleeding from capillary vessels, in children leads to bone malformation, bleeding gums and losing teeth as the earliest sign, but be warned, tenderness and pain from the ruptured blood vessels, if untreated, leads to gangrene and death). Smoking is a risk factor for vitamin C deficiency, due to increased oxidative stress. If you smoker, you may need 35 mg of vitamin C on top of your daily needs. Second hand smokers will also need the extra vitamin C. For infants, breast milk and infant formula does not have enough vitamin C, and boiling the milk destroy all the vitamin C. For adults, the fruit and vegetables, eaten daily, will provide enough vitamin C. If you are old, abuse alcohol and/or drugs, have mental illness, then you may not get enough vitamin C. If you have a limited variety of food, you may not get enough vitamin C. Intestinal malabsorption, chronic diseases and some cancer patients are also at risk of vitamin C deficiency. Vitamin C has low toxicity, with no serious side effects (diarrhea, nausea, intestinal cramps).
Vitamin C does not prevent cold or make it shorter/less severe, but if you take it regularly, can shorten flu/cold duration and make it less severe, proven that you take it before, not that you start when you got the flu.
Vitamin C can also deactivate histamine, relieving a stuffy nose.
Next post is about folates and folic acid.
Yours truly,
George
