Splinterlands Blog #2 - I've Signed Up, Now What

By Jmac1773 | The Hard Fork | 2 Oct 2021

Welcome back to the complete newbie's guide to Splinterlands.  Splinterlands, if you didn't already know, is a NFT-based card battle game and allows you to earn, buy, sell, and rent playable NFT cards.  If you haven't sign up already I would highly recommend it - the game is growing and there is an impending new card set dropping in a few days (Chaos Legion) so you will want to get started and on your way to earning and having fun!

If you'd like to sign up for Splinterlands, just click on the highlighted word back to the left and you're in!!  And I would appreciate the click!

I Clicked on the Link - Now What?

Glad you asked.  If you haven't already done so, you will need to go here and download and create an account for a Hive Wallet.  I know, I know... you're saying I need another crypto wallet like I need a hole in my head but the Hive wallet works VERY well with Splinterlands since the game is built on the Hive blockchain.  It just works.

Once you have created an account with your Hive wallet, go back Splinterlands and link your Hive wallet to the game by clicking on your username.

Where to find the wallet link function

Where to find the wallet link... umm... link

Once you have done that, you're good to go.  You can also link other wallets as shown below:

I do have my Ethereum wallet linked to the game but, since I'm new and still learning, I really son't know what the use for that is yet.

Wallet Is Linked - Now What?

WOW! You are full of great questions!  In a nutshell - PLAY!! Actually, the game will walk you through a tutorial but really, you'll want to search out some YouTube videos on strategy, etc.  There is SO much to this game that you need to be prepared to put a little bit of effort in to learn at least the basics.  For example, Ranked Battles.  During my first season (seasons last 14 days and allow you to earn loot chests), I worked my way up to the Bronze III level - the lowest level - and was quite happy with myself.  Then I battled some more and lost my Bronze III ranking just as the season ended.  I had earned five loot chests to open just before the season ended but, as the gaming gods would have it, the chests disappear if you fall back below Bronze III to the Novice level.  So, no chests for me to open.

Moral of the story, if you are clinging on to a certain Rank level and the season is almost over, resist the urge to battle and possibly lose your loot chests.

So now that you are signed up, go and explore the game and try to earn some DEC.  Speaking of earning things, why don't we make that the topic of blog #3 about Splinterlands:  The in-game (and real-world) economy of the game.

Need the Splinterlands link again?  Ok.  Here it is.  Now go have fun!!

New to the world of crypto and I'm determined to help others understand it better and have fun doing it!

So here's the deal: I'm a middle-aged guy who is dipping my toes in the world of crypto, NFTs, AMMs, DEX, DAPP, and all the other acronyms that I generally have little idea as to what they mean. But it's fun. That's what I want to explore in this blog. If I'm honest, this blog actually has a two-fold purpose: To learn and demystify the world of crypto for those of us over, say... 35, and to have FUN doing it. And also to make some extra money along the way.
