Sam Altman's World has launched a new service that verifies people's identities during Zoom meetings to help prevent AI deepfakes.
The system uses an iris scan from World’s Orb device, a live selfie and the person's video feed. If everything matches, the participant gets a badge confirming they are a verified human.
The service is now available to Zoom enterprise customers, and companies like Bain Capital and VanEck are involved in World’s enterprise expansion.
My opinion is that AI companies created this mess, are benefiting from the AI boom by harvesting people's content, and are now selling solutions to problems caused by AI in the first place. And they benefit from it again. It's a full circle.
Besides that, there are serious privacy concerns around collecting people's biometric data. This could eventually lead to something resembling China's surveillance system. And let's not forget that these things often start with the idea of helping the public.
Honestly, I am very skeptical about this and don't trust it. I understand the argument about preventing identity theft, but let's be honest and not forget who helped create this problem in the first place.
