Hi, friend.
Last Wednesday was my birthday, and it got me reflecting deeply on my goals and the lessons life has taught me about them. Here are some hard-earned insights:
Life Lessons About Goals
-
A goal is a picture of what a better life looks like.
It’s not just something you achieve but something that reshapes your reality. -
You don't rise to the level of your goals; you fall to the level of your systems.
Goals without the infrastructure to achieve them are just dreams waiting to disappoint you. -
The more you talk about your goals, the less likely you are to achieve them.
Sharing your goals releases dopamine—the brain’s reward chemical. It tricks your mind into feeling accomplished before doing the work.
It's the same reason starting over after losing progress feels so hard—your brain already gave itself the reward for finishing. -
You need a big vision.
The number of goals you can set is infinite; the work you can do is not.
A big vision doesn’t fill a page; it fits in a sentence. It’s the thing you’d sacrifice everything for. Without it, small goals will pile up but never add up. -
You won't achieve all your goals—and that's a good thing.
Some goals are stepping stones. As you grow, the future version of you will reshape them into something new. What you want now is different from what you wanted six years ago. Why? New information. -
Goals are for direction, not identity.
Your Reticular Activating System (RAS)—that part of your brain that makes you notice things like restaurants when you’re hungry—needs a target. That’s the only purpose of goals: direction. Don’t let them define who you are. -
Sacrifice is non-negotiable.
Most people write goals as if they’re wish lists. They forget to map out the sacrifices required. Goals are math: If 100 inputs give you X results, then 10,000 inputs give you 100X. Success is predictable when you measure every day. -
Always measure.
What gets measured gets managed. Track your inputs and outputs to know where you stand and where you're headed.
