And that may be a real game-changer for “using crypto.”
Cryptocurrencies have always operated on a single principle:
A human is sitting behind the transaction.
A wallet is being opened by a person.
A player selects a token.
Someone clicks “swap.”
A transaction is approved by someone.A transaction is sanctioned by some.
However, when the “someone” becomes an AI agent, what happens?
That's the section of crypto I find much more interesting than another token launch or another debate regarding which chain is quicker.
AI agents are now more than just question-answer agents. They can accomplish tasks, interact with software and, more and more frequently, operate blockchain systems.
As soon as an AI can hold money, request a service and then pay for it, crypto transforms from a speculative asset to infrastructure for machines.
That could be a much bigger story.
The strange idea of a wallet that doesn't belong to a person
Suppose you say the following to an AI agent:
“Buy the lowest priced API you can for this task.”
This would typically involve a person searching for the service, creating an account, providing payments details and confirming the purchase.
It is possible that the process could be automated by an autonomous agent.
It locates the service.
It verifies the cost.
It sends payment.
Takes the result.
Then, it proceeds to the next assignment.
This is where cryptocurrencies get interesting.
Programmable payments exist on blockchain networks already, and value can be transferred across the world without the need for two humans to coordinate each payment using stablecoins.
With respect to the 2026 institutional prospectus, Coinbase mentions specifically the requirement for AI agents to have open and programmable payment rails, and cites protocols like x402 as those suited for machine-to-machine payments.
One minute, the buyer is not necessarily a human.
The customer may be a software.
Crypto's biggest opportunity might be boring
This is the part that's left out.
The term “AI + crypto” always brings to mind AI tokens.
But the more intriguing prospect may be without a swashbuckling token.
It could be infrastructure.
Consider what an independent agent may need some day:
computing power
data
APIs
storage
software tools
blockchain transactions
identity
verification
payments
A 24 hour agent must have a means to make money from those resources.
This is where crypto rails may come in handy.
The industry has already progressed beyond the basic AI chatbots in recent projects to automate DeFi interactions, facilitate cross-chain operations and trigger smart-contract interactions.
The change is insipid:
AI is not making Crypto smarter per se.
AI may just be one of the biggest consumers of crypto!
But there's a huge problem
In theory, it sounds like a lot of fun to have an AI friend with cash, but one concerning query comes to mind:
What if the AI makes a mistake?
Human can be fooled.
A computer running an AI can be fooled as well.
Unless an autonomous system can make decisions much quicker than a human.
It requires more than smart models, which is why agentic finance is being done. It requires identity and verification, spending limits and permissions.
In essence, the August 2026 research paper “agentic finance” captures the same sentiment: that an AI's capacity to create the transaction should not extend to the capacity to execute the transaction.
That distinction could prove to be very significant.
We may eventually need something similar to:
The process involves the blockchain transaction of permission layer, followed by AI brain.
rather than:
AI brain → unlimited wallet
This is not as cool.
However, exciting technology can only be useful if boring infrastructure is in place.
The next crypto boom might look nothing like the last one
Crypto has gone through plenty of narratives.
ICO.
DeFi.
NFTs.
Memecoins.
Layer 2s.
Now AI.
But I think there's an important difference with AI agents.
Previous narratives were mostly about humans using crypto applications.
AI agents introduce another possibility:
machines using crypto applications.
That creates a completely different scale.
A person might make ten transactions in a day.
An automated system could potentially make thousands of tiny transactions while working continuously.
That doesn't guarantee adoption, and it definitely doesn't guarantee that every AI-crypto project succeeds.
In fact, researchers looking at the broader AI × crypto ecosystem still describe the meaningful integration as being in its early stages.
But that's exactly why I think it's worth watching.
Don't chase the AI ticker. Watch the infrastructure.
If this story unfolds, I wouldn't just be observing the AI token that's gaining traction on social media.
I would check on the underbelly of it.
Are payments made by agents possible?
Are they able to establish their identity?
Do users have the ability to manage the spending of an agent?
Is there a way to confirm transactions?
Are all the networks communicating?
Can an agent pay for a service without having to manually approve each and every minute service?
More important than whether or not an AI-themed token gets another viral week are those questions.
And the overall 2026 crypto year is already signaling this trend of AI agents and modular systems, with stablecoins, tokenization and programmable blockchain applications.
The weirdest part?
For years we had been asking:
“Will Humans use Crypto someday?”
Perhaps we are posing a whole new question:
What will happen to cryptocurrencies in the era of AI agents?
If it is indeed a yes, today's crypto infrastructure may be something much larger than a location where individuals exchange tokens.
It might be the payment system for programs operating during sleep.
