The headlines are popping up everywhere that Europe is headed for a disastrous winter as Russia cuts off some 80% of natural gas supplies from the Nord Stream lines. One headline on KingWorldNews.com this morning states that a black swan energy 'doom loop' in Europe is set to trigger a 2008 Lehman style collapse. Charts within this article are stunning, to say the least. Click here to view...
For example, French power prices for 2023 trading are up 30 X the 5 year average while German power prices have hit a fresh, new record high. Billionaire investor Kyle Bass is warning of this coming catastrophe and wonders why this isn't front page news.
I also caught wind that Japan is restarting its nuclear power plants as it too is reeling from super high energy costs as the country imports most of its energy while France and Germany shut theirs down, fueling their disastrous green energy plans, pun intended. The Yen hasn't been doing well lately, exacerbating the issue of affordability.
A shocking article popped up on Zero Hedge this morning informing us that Polish citizens have been lining up, for days at a time in order to get their hands on some coal to warm their homes this coming winter. More and more people are resorting to wood and coal for heat this winter. Unlike coal and wood, natural gas is clean burning, only producing about 4% waste. Unfortunately, natural gas has been weaponized in a geopolitical game between NATO and Russia and things are likely to get worse.
Elon Musk also appeared in an article on Zero Hedge this morning and he makes it clear that we cannot survive without oil and gas. Without it, civilization will collapse and this is coming from a guy who's building electric cars! I have to agree. The reason we've had so much prosperity in the last 100 years is because of oil and gas. All the solar panels and windmills cannot compare to the amount of energy we've harnessed and continue to harness from the extraction of oil. Nevermind that all those solar panels and windmills are NOT recyclable.
Europeans are being warned to lower their thermostats this winter and wear extra clothing, take sponge baths instead of showers or face heavy fines. That's not going to go over well in all the hospitals, palliative care, seniors' residences and industries that require a lot of energy.
Here in Canada, we have our own healthy supply of natural gas. My home furnace runs on natural gas and the average monthly heating bill in winter is roughly $100-$120 which is very reasonable but spot prices are heavily affected by what's going on in the world and I expect to pay more this winter. How much, is anyone's guess.
What do I plan on doing to counter spikes in energy / heating costs. I've already purchased a quarter acre lot in the province of New Brunswick near where I was born for just $7,200 inclusive. Next spring, I will begin construction of my 'almost tiny home' and i'll be sure to incorporate a wood stove for cheap winter heating. My lot is full of young poplar trees and those will be my source of wood for a couple of years, at least.
If you have a wood stove or fireplace, go out and stock up on wood now. Prices have already jumped quite a bit. I've read that a cord of wood is now going for $400-$500. When everyone rushes to stock up at the same time and at the last minute, expect a spike in price for one cord of wood so if you nee to stock up, do it now. Don't wait till the last minute!
Also, be sure to have stored a good supply of food in the form of dry goods, such as grains, rice and flour as well as canned and jarred foods. We're being warned of a severe shortage of food this winter with the droughts occurring in the USA and Europe, not to mention the disruptions cause by the Ukraine war. I've been busy gardening and growing my own food. I've been learning to preserve my foods. See the link below about dehydrating food. It's one of a few good ways to preserve your foods. You should have at least 3 months worth of foods on hand.
Stay warm this winter!.
