McDonald's Now Hiring Sign

Fast Food Joints Set To Slash Hours

One can't deny the convenience of picking up a quick meal at the drive-thru of your favorite fast food restaurant but with all the help wanted signs popping up at almost all of these places, it was inevitable their head offices would be forced to begin making changes to accommodate for the massive shortage of workers that slowly began developing at the start of the pandemic. We've now reached a point that it can't be denied anymore.

McDonald's Corporation just announced they will be slashing hours of operation by 10% to make up the difference for the shortage of labor. McDonald's employs more than 800,000 people. Their CEO, Chris Kempczinski has already mentioned that hours were already reduced by about 10%, specifically because of and since the pandemic began.

In my hometown of Cambridge, Ontario it seems all the fast food joints are desperate for new hires. Tim Horton's, the biggest coffee chain in Canada is short staffed at just about every one of its stores. A sign like this one is now a familiar site at most of their stores. Their drive-thrus are always packed so there's no shortage of business but it's clear they're struggling to keep up. Most of their stores are open 24 hours a day. I expect them to eventually announce slashing of hours of operation too.

Tim Horton's Now Hiring Sign

An article on Zero Hedge this morning regarding McDonald's specifically states that it's not just the pandemic but the record rate of resignations. So many have simply quit or retired within a relatively short period of time, causing disruptions now coming to light in the form of massive labor shortages, affecting hours of operation. Employers, desperate for employees, are offering sign on bonus, better hours, better pay and benefits. Some will even pay you just to come in for an interview.

But all of that just doesn't seem to be working (pardon the pun). Maybe most people don't want to start at 6 am? Winters are brutal here in Canada. I've done that 6 am crap and I can tell you, it's no fun getting up at 5 in the morning to shovel the snow to clear my driveway so I can get the car out and head off to work. Maybe employers are just pushing us too hard, in exchange for too little.

So now, the fast food joints are preparing us for shorter hours of operation. A simple solution is to learn to cook for ourselves. Heck, it might even be... healthier???

For now, we'll just have to deal with the fact that we are not only living through a pandemic but also a Great Resignation. I'm not too worried though. I think it's all part of the Great Awakening that will lead to a better understanding of who we are and what we want out of life.
