64.45% did not vote for Doug Ford

65.45%% Eligible Voters Did Not Vote For Doug Ford

Progressive Conservative leader Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario (sounds very Soviet, I know) is hunkering down and has threatened arrests, heavy fines and jail time for protesters in Ottawa and in Windsor, where the Ambassador Bridge is closed, except for one lane, where some 24% of all goods are traded between Canada and the U.S.A.. Toronto city hall is also surrounded by protesters and truckers are blocking roads there as well.

Doug Ford took his party's helm after Patrick Brown stepped down due to allegations of sexual  misconduct in the month of March, 2018 and was elected just a few months later, on June, 2018, winning a majority of the vote in a hotly contested election in which then Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne's minority government just couldn't shake off her predecessor, Dalton McGuinty's $1.2 Billion failed natural gas plant fiasco, of which no one has ever been criminally charged. Both of these failed Premiers are now collecting double gold plated pensions.

It was so hot an election that the Liberals lost almost all their seats, down to just seven. A party needs 8 seats to have 'official status' in Ontario and since 2018, the Liberals in Ontario have had no official status. It was the worst showing in the party's 161 year history.

Being a citizen of the Province of Ontario, I have never missed voting in a provincial election. I did not vote for Doug Ford in the last election. His brother Rob's performance as mayor of Toronto convinced me to cast my vote elsewhere. I, like most Ontarians, was sick of the Liberals so they also didn't get my vote.

So I crunched some numbers regarding the last elections held here in Ontario that got Doug Ford elected and destroyed the Liberals. What I discovered didn't really surprise me. Although Doug Ford got the majority of casted votes, the total numbers I found actually paint a much different picture and reveals the real mood of the people of Ontario. There is always a subset of people who don't vote, who've literally given up on the whole voting process. Including this subset was critical in helping me get the final number I was looking for.

Ontario's 42nd general election - Thursday, June 7, 2018.

Largest turnout since 1999.

Total eligible voters approx. 8.4 million people.

58% of eligible voters cast their ballot, nearly 4,872,000 people.

42% did not vote at all, some 3.528 million people.

Progressive Conservatives (Doug Ford) win majority, 76 of 124 seats.

This amounts to 61.29% of all votes cast.

Which equals to about 2,986,049 people.

5,413,915 Ontarians either did not vote for Doug Ford or did not vote at all.

Which amounts  to 64.45% of eligible voters.

While the last election in Ontario appears to show the Progessives won a 'majority', this proves that the real majority of the citizens of Ontario actually do NOT support Doug Ford and may explain why so many protesters are coming out in droves at Toronto city hall, the Ambassador Bridge and in Ottawa. I'm just waiting for the bridges at Niagara to close if Doug Ford doesn't soften his stance. Most people aren't aware but there are 4 bridges spanning the upper and lower Niagara Rivers. While the ambassador Bridge gets 24% of trade volume, the four bridges, all in close proximity, together easily surpass in trade volume. I know, I grew up in Niagara! All I ever saw at the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie and further down at the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge were long lines of trucks. The Rainbow Bridge by the waterfalls is also a major cross point. The Whirlpool Bridge just a little ways down doubles as a train bridge and a 2 lane vehicle bridge.

Ontario's next elections are due in June, 2022. I have a feeling it will be the largest turnout in a long time. The entire political landscape is set to dramatically change, not only in Ottawa but in Ontario as well. Are we about to see another party decimated and lose its official status? We'll find out in a few months.
