Splinterlands Weekly Battle Challenges - Another week, Another Challenge so here's my entry....

First things first, feel free to just go to their website directly but if Splinterlands interests you I'd be very happy if you joined up with my referral link:

We will, We will Roc you!  This weeks challenge is using the Giant Roc, not from the WWE, but from the Fire Splinter!

A fire card with two abilities, reach and flying.

It's not in the starter deck anymore so I don't use it these days (I had to rent it for the challenge).  It was a useful card for certain battles but even if I had it now I'd be more likely to use the Radiated Brute which has the same cost but forgoes one speed for an additional melee attack!

However sometimes cards like this are useful - and by like this I mean Flying!

So let's see why in the battle!

The Battle

The rules for this battle were:

 - 29 mana cap

 - Taking Sides - no neutral cards

 - Earthquake - Two melee damage to non-flying cards

 - Fire, Earth, or Death monsters only.

Tricky to scout this match but to me the options were Fire using Tarsa for extra life, Earth to try to magic the other side out or Death to take advantage of life reduction and mitigate magic.  Since I needed to do the Roc challenge I went with the Fire option.

And so my lineup was as follows:

Tarsa (4) - For the extra life mainly but the extra melee doesn't hurt (me at least!);

Living Lava (7) - For the shield ability which helps mitigate earthquake;

Giant Roc (5) - Flying and Reach means it is handy from second slot, doesn't get hurt by earthquake and can hit through shield thanks to Tarsa;

Spark Pixies (4) - Flying and has two attack so can hit through shield.  The Pixies are also fast so have a good chance to dodge;

Lava Launcher (9) - Powerful ranged attack and a decent armor and life pool means it can survive quite a few earthquakes;

This team used all 29 mana but should be able to do decent damage and survive earthquake for a while.  It could be dicey if the opponent went with a magic heavy team however.

Fortunately my opponent went a Fire team as well.

Tarsa (4) - For the extra life mainly but the extra melee helps too;

Radiated Scorcher (1) - just to soak up a shot and fill out the team I think;

Living Lava (7) - For the shield ability which helps mitigate earthquake;

Radiated Brute (5) - will be able to attack once the Scorcher dies with a solid three melee thanks to Tarsa. Has five base life so can survive a couple of Earthquakes too;

Serpentine Spy (3) - for the fast initial opportunity attack;

Tenyii Striker (5) - for the powerful melee sneak attack and can survive several earthquakes;

Scavo Firebolt (4) - for the two ranged attack and can survive several earthquakes;

Using all 29 of the mana cap as well rather than using flyers my opponent has gone for a team that can just survive a few earthquakes but could do a fair bit of damage and might be able to take my team out! Let's see whose strategy works best!

Turn One - Speedy Pixies go first followed by the Launcher and combined they take out the Scorcher.  His Scorcher has done well absorbing two of my teams attacks.  The Spy misses the Pixies which is great.  His Firebolt and my Roc strike our respective Living Lava tanks, his striker hits my Launcher, the two Lava's trade shots and the Brute ends the turn with a shot on my Lava.  The turn ends with only the one casualty (the scorcher) and my lava with five life, his with seven life.

Turn Two - Starts with an earthquake! Each of his team takes damage and the Serpentine Spy dies.  Only my Living Lava and Lava Launcher take damage.  The Pixies then start with a shot on his Lava before my Launcher and his Firebolt trade shots on our respective lava tanks.  The Striker takes out the last of my launchers armor and my Roc hits his Lava.  The two lava's trade shots and his comes off second best and is killed.  It is not much of a victory however as his Radiated Brute finishes the turn by taking out my Lava. The turn ends with the Roc as my tank with five life, the Brute his tank with four life.

Turn Three - The teams start three on three when the Earthquake hits all of his team but only my Launcher.  His team's life is now much depleted.  The Pixies go first and finish off the Radiated Brute. The Launcher goes next taking out the Striker and the Roc goes next finishing off the Firebolt who was useless in first slot now anyway!

And it goes to show - Earthquake damage can really deplete a team fast so flying is crucial in these matches!
