Splinterlands Weekly Battle Challenges - This week is an oft-forgotten card, the Gargoya Scrapper

First things first, feel free to just go to their website directly but if Splinterlands interests you I'd be very happy if you joined up with my referral link:

This weeks card to shine is the Gargoya Scrapper

On the face of it no real use-case for this card, even at later levels it only gets void to minimise magic damage.  So what do I think of it? Well nothing to add except in a low mana match it could be useful as a filler.

The Battle

The rules for this battle were:

  • 30 mana cap - A decent cap

  • Close Range - Ranged can attack from first position

  • Holy Protection - All cards have the divine shield ability

  • Life or Earth splinters only

Given I wanted to do the challenge I picked Life which also works well with the Close Range stipulation.

And so my lineup was as follows:

Sloan (4) - for the bonus to ranged

Clay Golem (6) - I suspected an earth opposition so went with a magic defense tank

Crystal Werewolf (3) - More magic mitigation and a backup tank

Pelacor Arbalest (6) - One of lifes premier damage dealers 2 * 3 (with sloan) per turn

Evangalist (6) - for the three ranged attack (I had this card as I rented it for a life daily focus)

Crystalsmith (4) - for the ranged attack and tank heal

Gargoya Scrapper (1) - to fill in the team and soak a shot at the back should the enemy have sneak.

Using the whole 30 cap this team had 11 ranged damage potential and stron magic mitigation.

The enemy went, as I suspected, with an earth team as follows:

Mylor (3) - For thorns of course

Unicorn Mustang (8) - fast, strong melee and magic mitigation!

Khmer Princess (2) - for the low cost magic attack

Mantoid (6) - snipe ranged attack with a decent health pool

Queen Mycelia (4) - for the extra armor for the team and a magic attack

Wood Nymph (4) - for the tank heal and another magic attack

Venari Scout (3) - for an opportunity attack

Also using the whole 30 cap this team would be challenging for a melee heavy team but I went ranged so expect it will start off tough but I'll win in the end.  Lets see how it goes!

Turn One - Mustang gets a shot off on the Clay Golem but Divine Shield prevents any damage. My team goes next due to speed reducing the Mustang to seven as Divine Shield and a Pelacor miss happen.  His team goes next reducing the Pelacor to one life.  His magic attacks are harmless but he does get a heal on the Mustang back to 10 life.  The Clay Golem misses.  An uneventful round with no casualties but the Pelacor Arbalest wont last the next turn!

Turn Two - Mustang hits the Clay Golem but that damage is later fixed by the Crystal Smith.  The Evangalist and Arbalest demolish the Mustang.  The Crystal smith takes out the Princess's divine shield.  Mantoid kills the Arbalest and the scrapper does its job soaking up a shot from the Venari Scout's attack with its divine shield.  The magic attackers of the Earth team are again irrelevant.  The Clay Golem takes out the Princess's armor but does take two damage from thorns in return.

Turn Three - a bit of a graphical glitch here but the Clay Golem took thorns damage at the end of turn two so actually starts the round with four life.  As we can see the match looks close but I still have a lot of damage potential whereas with the Clay Golem much of his team is negated!  The turn starts and the Evangalist kills the Kmer Princess, the Crystal Smith heals the Golem and takes out the Mantoid's divine shield.  The Mantoid can still attack due to close range and does hit the Golem.  The magic attackers are irrelevant and the Scout wastes another shot on the Scrapper.  The turn ends with the Clay Golem hitting the Mantoid taking out armor and being hit by thorns leaving it with two life left.

Turn Four -  Evangalist and Crystal Smith take out the Mantoid while the Clay Golem gets a heal.  The Venari Scout takes out the Scrapper and the magic attacks are still irrelevant.  The Clay Golem takes out the Queens divine shield and again takes thorns damage to end the turn.  I have the upper hand for sure now.

Turn Five - Evangalist and Crystalsmith in the right order could take out the Queen but alas that doesn't happen.  The Clay Golem gets a heal as does the Queen. The Knifer and thorns reduce the Clay Golem to one life while the Queen is also reduced to one life.

Turn Six and Seven - Evangalist takes out the Queen which also removes the bonus armor from his team.  Crystal Smith takes out the divine shield of the Nymph before a combination of thorns and a Scout shot finally kill the Clay Golem but not before he takes out the Nymph. This leaves the Werewolf as my tank and the Venari Scout the lone warrior left on his team which succumbs quickly in turn Seven.

Overall a tough battle but the Clay Golem was definitely the star absorbing a lot of shots.  Notwithstanding that the Scrapper did its job surviving three hits to help the team out.  So what did we learn?

 - Divine Shield is a powerful thing;

 - The Scrapper is not quite useless with two life for one mana;

 - Void is awesome when the opposition uses magic!
