Splinterlands - Battle Library One - An odd in your face battle

Splinterlands is a simple to play, hard to master game that can have some quite interesting battles.

I posted about a surprising battle I had with against the "OP" team of Kron and Scarred Llama and thought I should do this more often so I'm going to try to do them several times a week (depending on whether I find any battles interesting of course!).

First things first, feel free to just go to their website directly but if Splinterlands interests you I'd be very happy if you joined up with my referral link:

So for my first in this series of posts this is a battle that was interesting not because of the summoners, splinters or cards but because of the rules that applied to it.

The rules that applied to this battle were:

- Mana cap of 29 - A reasonable size so most cards are feasible

- All splinters except life were available

- Back to Basics - all monsters lose their abilities

- Up close and personal - Melee monsters only

So this set of rules is interesting, it makes the choice of summoner important (as their abilities still apply) and because its a Melee only battle with no abilities - no sneak, no snipe, no opportunity meaning only the first monster can attack!

The lineups were set up as follows:

2d614c007067040f5ff2b0482ac45b3fa2764e828ee5194c0285a30fafd49cff.png

I went with:

Summoner - Mylor Crowling - an ideal choice for a Melee only battle as Thorns is perfect for it!

Stone Golem in first slot to absorb the initial shots and hope thorns can take out their first tank

Goblin Mech in second slot to do some big damage (four melee) and he has a decent six life and five shield on top of that.

Rexxie in third slot to do more damage (four melee) and he has a solid six life too.

Biceratops in my last slot as he has a shield and two melee.

The opponent went with:

Summoner - Pyre - Not sure that's a good plan but it does mean he'll get the first shot most turns and in some cases that can make a difference.

Goblin Mech in first slot presumably for the damage

Elven Defender in second slot for the tankiness with high life and shield

Cocatrice, Flame Monkey, Goblin Bruiser, Kobold filled the rest of the team - all low cost cards presumably to fill out the team and hope numbers will be the key to victory.

And here's how the battle went:

Turn One and Two - Goblin Mech and Stone Golem trade shots.  Thorns do some damage to Goblin Mech, Stone Golem only hits once (one miss there).  Stone Golem is left with two life at the end of turn two.  His Goblin Mech is left with six life.  Advantage to him so far...

Turn three - His goblin mech goes first (Pyre) and kills the stone golem but takes two damage due to a last thorns hit.  Due to the RNG my goblin mech then gets a turn and with his four damage kills his goblin mech.  We've both lost our front line tanks but numbers are still on his side.

Turn four - Elven Defender heads his team now but even with Pyre he is a bit slow so my Goblin Mech goes first taking out his armor.  He hits after but cant break through Goblin Mech's armor - Elven Defender takes thorn damage and has six life, Goblin Mech has three armor and six life - Advantage to me.

Turn five - Elven Defender and Goblin Mech trade shots, Thorns kill the Elven Defender, Goblin Mech still has one shield and all of his six life.  The battle is all but won.

Turn six to eight - Goblin Mech runs through the remainder of his team.  Cocatrice dies to thorns, and the rest are just fodder for the Mech.

So overall an easy win but a tricky lineup to decide on.  I definitely wouldn't have used Pyre for this sort of battle. For non legendary summoners, Mylor is pick of the bunch for this sort of battle but if not him Malric Inferno (plus one melee), Zintar Mortalis (minus one melee to opponents) could be very useful and probably better than the plus one armor/health heroes.

I hope you've enjoyed this first entry to my Battle Library and if you found it interesting and are not into Splinterlands yet give it a go:
