I remember many years ago on Facebook (tells you how long ago it was that I was actively using Facebook as a teen) I joined a Flat-Earth group for fun. I didn't ever believe the Earth to be flat - because, y'know, I have a semi-functioning brain - but I joined it for fun, because I thought it was a joke group.
I was unknowingly poking fun directly at members thinking they were in on the joke, and I eventually left when I got bored of being harassed for being a "brainwashed sheep" who "believes anything the government tells them"... very original, I know.
However, it was while I was on the group that I found a diagram of how some Flat Earthers think the flat Earth looks like, and it told me everything I needed to know;
The usual image shows the Arctic circle in the centre of the map, with the Northern Hemisphere around it, the Southern Hemisphere around that, and the Antarctic ice wall surrounding it all, keeping the planet's oceans in.

[The regular Arctic-centred flat Earth image, with Antarctica around the edge]
This diagram, however, showed it in reverse: Antarctica in the middle, the Southern Hemisphere around it, the Northern Hemisphere around that and the Arctic Circle circling it all, keeping the planet's oceans in. This is called the Antarctic Projection as it turns out:

It was after a little digging that I found something out about this particular depiction of the Flat Earth compared to what we mostly see: this one had been made by a Flat Earther in Australia.
So in this diagram, Australia was closer to the centre of the Earth... and then it clicked:
Flat Earthers also believe the Moon, Sun and planets to all orbit the Earth.
They also believe the Earth is at the centre of the universe, and that it is the only planet to be flat - ya never see a Flat Uranus group, do you... OK you might do, but that'd probably be more for medical reasons.
My takeaway from this: well, depending on where a Flat Earther lives, they put themselves as close as possible to the absolute centre of not just the Earth, but of the universe and existence itself.
They also scrutinise disbelievers, more often than not merely shoving their evidence aside, by claiming that they have been brainwashed, and it is only they and they alone who can help show them the truth... They believe they should be the centre of attention - they are very attention-starved.
So ha, I answered my original question in the title - Attention: this is what they need.
Now, I'm not trying to insult them, but it is an interesting and actually very sad thought: do people willingly choose to make others believe that they believe in the absurdly un-true simply because it is so absurd that it will garner them some form of attention that they have been unfortunately deprived of their entire lives, knowing the attention will largely be negative?
In other words: do they know what they are doing?

As a final thought: even if it's true, and we've been lied to by the government and NASA... so what? What happens next? We re-write the school books, NASA makes an apology, and... that's it.
I really do not understand the gain for malicious power structures in telling the people that the shape of the Earth is not what they've been told. There's no end-game.
Also a solar eclipse would just be a flat line on the moon... in the words of today's youth, I can't even.
I mean it's not even level is it? Mountains were the giveaway, you muppets.
They do make me laugh though. Bless 'em.

Anyway,
Ciao.
