Building Bee Boards - Measurements and Marking

The Solitary Bees should like the homes im building for them. Though in my last batch of boards I made I had an issue with the center hole. It was offset and made an imperfect circle. From what ive read and watched, the Mason and Leafcutter bees like circular holes. So having crescents may not appeal to them like circular ones do.

What happened was my center hole was not centered due to it being a one off and an odd channel. In my new designs I add another channel to make the amount of total channels an even number. That way when I do my wood routing the pairs are equal distance making perfect circles.

The channels are between nine and ten inches, this should increase the amount of females produced per cycle. Having too short of a channel to cause the Bees to create more males and may cause an imbalance in their population.

I use my ruler and a sharpie to mark my channels before cutting. The pen squeals in pain as I use it on bare wood. I should have used a pencil but oh well.

Using this board gives me a template to cut more boards in the future to the same size.

A few more months and ill know if the Bees like them or not. Looking forward to the trails of my Bee Boards on the solitary bee population.
