"Bla bla bla", The Hacker and Snow Crash

By mildandred | Short Films Rock! | 26 Nov 2021

I love films that don't take themselves too seriously. "The Hacker" does fall into this category. There is one fun scene - in a short film that is full of fun scenes - where the protagonist, a hacker, is doing his hacking...thingy. What do we see on his laptop screen?

bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla...

It's funny because it's true. For many of us non-techies or non-coders or non-hackers, it all looks like gibberish. Here's a relevant quote from Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash", the dystopian novel that first featured the term Metaverse: "Well, all information looks like noise until you break the code." The hero and protagonist of Snow Crash is Hiro Protagonist, a hacker.

They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. With my very little knowledge of cyber security and stereotypical knowledge of hackers, I wrote a short story titled "Weakest Link" about a hacker who, through the music of The Shenganiguns, has an attack of conscience. The hacker in "The Hacker" also has an attack of conscience but only after paying his debt to society.

"Pay your debt and bleed as well
You’re living in the same circumstances

The end of an era
Our future no clearer"
- "Wonderland" by Simply Red.
