The monsoon winds over the Western Ghats howled like wounded beasts, bending the tall areca palms until their fronds swept the muddy earth. In the quiet hamlet of Meledam, nestled deep within the rain-drenched valleys, darkness fell not with the sunset, but with a sudden, suffocating chill.
Devan stood at the edge of the sacred grove, his lantern casting erratic shadows against the moss-covered granite serpent stones. He was only twenty-three, but the weight of centuries-old secrets bore down upon his shoulders. The village elders whispered that the boundary seals laid three hundred years ago were cracking. Something ancient and predatory had awakened across the river.
A low, vibrating hum resonated from beneath the damp earth. It was neither thunder nor an earthquake; it sounded like the rhythmic beating of a distant chenda, slow and deliberate.
Devan raised the lantern. The amber glow pierced the veil of falling mist, revealing the outline of a massive silhouette standing beneath the canopy of the sacred banyan tree.
It was a wild water buffalo, its horns curling like blackened crescent moons, nostrils flaring with steam in the freezing air. Atop the beast sat a figure draped in shadow, holding a heavy wooden club carved with glowing crimson runes. The eyes of the rider were not the eyes of a mortal—they flickered with the unpredictable, terrifying brilliance of divine illusion.
"The seal is broken, child of the soil," a voice echoed, neither inside Devan's head nor entirely in the air around him. It rolled over the thunderclaps with absolute authority. "The warlords of the nether realm have crossed the threshold. The age of peace is at an end."
Devan fell to his knees, the lantern slipping from his trembling fingers. He knew the legends, whispered only behind locked doors at midnight. This was no malevolent spirit of the woods.
This was the Guardian of Maya—the warrior son of the wild woods, awakened once more to wage war against the encroaching shadows.
