Hydrogen Trucks go head-to-head with EV's
Way back in 2020 I wrote some blogs on Hydrogen to revisit them check here Hydrogen Powered Vehicles and here Hydrogen Types Defined
Coming back to the future we find ourselves learning that Retail Giant Walmart is deploying Hydrogen powered trucks.
What is Walmart Deploying?
It has been reported that Nikola Tre semi truck is the hydrogen powered fuel cell truck Walmart is testing. Testing will go on side-by-side EV Trucks.
Where is Walmart Deploying this fleet?
Walmart is testing the Nikola Tre hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (AKA HFCEV) in Canada. More specifically Mississauga, Ontario. This is part of their plan for 100% Alt fueled fleet. Turns out according to EV industry insiders at Electrek, Walmart is the 1st to deploy a Hydrogen truck in North America.
What else do we know about the Nikola HFCEV truck?
- First it is a Class 8 tractor
- Range of 400miles per tank (~800 km)
- The electric power is transferred to the high-voltage power-net, which can charge the on-board batteries, and transfer power to the pavement via an e-axle with integrated electric motors.
- Avoid 97 metric tons of CO2 tailpipe emissions annually according to the manufacturer.

Summary
I envision more hydrogen fleets being purchased, due to being cleaner and easier to maintain than EV rigs. Don't believe me here is a quote "According to Natural Resources Canada, hydrogen is the simplest, lightest and most abundant element on earth, has the highest energy per unit of any fuel and plays a critical role in working towards a carbon-neutral future."
Disclaimer - I don't have a dog in this fight just me being curious about new technologies. I don't work for any of these firms.
