I've long wanted to figure out what the law on foreign agents in the United States is, which they like to refer to when they say that there is the same law in America.

There, the law on foreign agents requires that individuals or organizations engaged in political activities on behalf of and in the interests of another State register and keep records. In fact, just as registration and reporting with tax authorities or some other authorities are required. That's all.
In Russia, this law has been turned into a repressive instrument of pressure on anyone who is objectionable with serious restrictions on civil rights, even if you have never been a politician. If a person has a different opinion, he is a foreign agent or a traitor.
