Trip Portugal - Church of São Nicolau - Porto

By portugal | portugal | 27 Apr 2021

The Church of S. Nicolau is a building representative of Porto's religious architecture, built after a fire in 1758. Despite showing some Baroque solutions, it is part of a current of neoclassical taste. In the nave of this church, with gilded rococo style, look at the altarpiece of Santo Elói, patron saint of the Goldsmiths, while in the sacristy the attention is turned to various works of art and pieces of jewelery.

This church has many details and has a predominant color that is golden. In the sacristy, there are several works of art and very valuable (gold pieces), for example the archzones came from hamburg in the year 1817 and have bronze handles.

Portugal and the city of Porto are very Catholic, but as always when I talk about religion I like to stress that we Portuguese respect other religions a lot even though we are very Catholic.

In this Church, the Confraria de Santo Eloy is located, patron of gold and silver goldsmiths in the city of Porto. Among the reference works, the image of São Nicolau stands out, the magnificent altar in gilded wood, Rococo style that houses the aforementioned painting by João da Gama Strobelle.

When you are in the Ribeira area in Porto do not forget to visit this church and see all the details it has.
