Travel Portugal - Vila Nova de foz côa

By portugal | portugal | 28 Jan 2020

Visiting Vila Nova de Foz Côa is to immerse yourself in the largest open air Paleolithic rock art complex. The landscapes that are out of sight, only blocked by the winding of the Douro River, and the religious heritage complete the range of tourist offer of this district of Guarda. This is where Beira Alta ends and begins Trás-os-Montes.

Along 17 kilometers of the Côa Valley, you can see the heritage that is considered the largest Paleolithic open air museum - in the world - and which in 1998 was classified as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Since 2010, the Côa Museum has been open, offering fantastic views of the Douro River.

And it is precisely by the Douro River that comes most of the thousands of tourists who visit the county every year. Arriving by boat to the port of Pocinho and then by bus or jeep, they travel along roads that tear mountains and valleys, always with a view of a unique, breathtaking landscape.

The vineyards and almond orchards are other natural works of art - it seems that they were planted with ruler and square. In Vila Nova de Foz Côa, you can visit the main church - which was included in the first list of properties classified as national monuments in 1910 -, the pillories, and know the usages and customs in some traditional shops that remain open in several city streets.

In Freixo de Numão, about 10 kilometers from the city, you can see the ruins of the Old Castle and Castanheiro do Vento, which originated in the Copper Age / Bronze Age, as well as the Roman sites of Prazo, Rumansil and Museu Casa Grande, which are part of the archaeological itineraries of the locality.
