Ever wondered how your sleep cycle works and why we need to sleep?

When we are asleep we go through 4 sleep fases. All these fases combined is called the sleep cycle. An average sleep cycle takes around 90 minutes and you have around 4-6 sleepcycles per night. A sleep cycle consists of several fases. These fases are called the REM and non-REM fases.

In the non-REM (85%) your brain is the least active. In this fase it is very rare to get dreams.
REM (rapid eye movement) (15%) is the deepest fase where your brain is the most active. In the REM your eyes are the most active, you dream, your heart rate lowers, you process you thoughts and emotions of the day, your growth hormons increase and a lot more.

                                                                                                     Jeugd, Baby, Kostuum, Pasgeboren, Liefde

Like I said before you sleep cycle consists of 4 sleep fases:

1 Slumber (non-REM)
2 Light (non-REM)
3 Deep (non-REM)
4 REM

1 Slumber
After you fall asleep you will enter the slumber fase. This is the first part of your non-REM. In this fase the amount of Alpha waves decreases and the amount of Theta waves increases. Your eye movement is getting slower. Very common in this fase is that when you wake up in this fase you will feel like you didn't sleep.

2 Light
This is the fase where you are lightly asleep. The light noices won't wake you, but you can still wake up quite easily.

3 Deep
This is the fase where you are deeply asleep. Your breathing and heart rate will decrease till its lowest point. Very common in this fase it when you wake up you are very disoriented. Whenever you have had this you know that it will take a while before you realize where you are.

4 REM
Another word for the REM fase is the dreaming fase. This is the most important fase. Like I said before in this fase your brain is the most active (comparable with being awake), muscles are relaxed, you dream, your heart rate lowers, you process you thoughts and emotions of the day, your growth hormons increase, your body heals and way more.

                                                                                           Droom, Wolken, Slaap, Tekst, Fantasie

5 reasons why sleep is important

  • It may increase your weight
  • It can make you depressive
  • It improves your immune system
  • It has an effect on you emotional and social relations
  • It improves your concentration

I hope you learned something.
