On Crypto Payment Adoption

By negativezero | negativezero | 13 Nov 2021

Tesla did a fantastic job this year in choosing to accept BTC: they provide an instantly depreciating asset in exchange for a speculative, scarce, growing asset. AMC takes the crown: providing a one-time experience and junk food with a massive profit margin in exchange for a scarce asset. [1] It takes one purchase and a week's time (sometimes less) to understand why using most cryptocurrencies as currencies is a terrible idea. I spent the $200 USD in crypto on an order to test this months ago and was really glad to see that I only paid $180 a few hours later. My $205 order looked like a mistake until I saw that my $170 was well spent. I wonder if the company still has my $220.

Unless you’re paying with XMR, getting rid of something you don’t care about, or have a very specific reason to purchase goods or services due to a particular coin’s network structure, there’s no point when purchasing power fluctuates or trends the way it does. It sounds great and it's a good move to "legitimize" crypto, but it’s symbolic to anyone outside of shareholders and company payroll. How many people will see it and say, "Oh wow, AMC is taking cryptocurrency now! Next time I go, I'll be sure to use it to show my support of a great business move!" I won't, you won't - if you believe something is worth holding, you want to keep it. The sensible move is to give them depreciating fiat and keep the valuable asset. Or don't go at all, concessions are overpriced and most movies are terrible. Don’t buy a Tesla either.
