Gyromitra is a type of spore fungus occurring in the northern hemisphere. The name Gyromitra comes from a gyroscope denoting the intricate and miter designating the turban. Some types of Gyromitra are very poisonous when they are raw due to the presence of gyromitrin, although some of the 18 species are edible after cooking, and Gyromitra are sought after in the Scandinavian countries. After consumption, general haemolysis has been reported which may lead to renal failure.
